Food and wine are essentials for a successful holiday, and with people traveling in Croatia and wanting to find local, authentic experiences, learning about and trying traditional local dishes is a holiday highlight for many. One of our absolute favorite dishes is the Dalmatian Peka. Peka easily wins over the hearts of our guests! So, What is the Peka? Probably the oldest way of food preparation in the Adriatic. It is about a steel bell, covered with hot coals, while the meat and vegetables are placed in the pot, and put into the embers of a fireplace.
Peka is an absolute top dish in the area, something which is put on the table when there is a guest in the house. The dish, and the privilege to taste while You are in Croatia. The most popular is the Veal Peka, but one of the interesting things about Peka is that You can make it with any kind of meat like chicken, lamb, and octopus. Its cooked for two hours, but after about an hour or so, the lid is lifted, meat is turned, and some other spices are added, like a mix of honey and cognac with Mediterranean herbs. Both octopus and veal turn tender and succulent, while the potatoes become especially sweet and tasty. The sauce is delicious, and it’s served with bread baked under peke and a glass of homemade wine!
